There are excellent niche tools for surplus charging and polished manufacturer apps. But between charging tool, inverter app and cloud portal, one question remains open: who actually optimizes the whole system? That is exactly where Solhive comes in.
Tools like evcc solve PV surplus charging brilliantly — Solhive built its own charger drivers following their proven blueprints. But control does not stop at the wallbox: battery strategy, heat pump, switchable loads and the power budget at the grid connection all come from one place. For example: “car at 80 % by 7 a.m., charge the battery in the cheap night window, never overload the grid connection” — three jobs, one controller.
Manufacturer apps end at the edge of their own product range. Solhive speaks Modbus, SunSpec, MQTT, REST and Home Assistant — mixed systems are the norm: Deye next to SMA, any wallbox, the heat pump via SG-Ready. And when a device gets replaced, your controller, history and settings stay.
Commercial energy management systems live in someone else's cloud: subscription, data outflow, black box. Solhive runs on hardware in your own home, keeps controlling during internet outages, and the source code can be inspected. Cloud connectivity only where you want it: remote access and installer support.
With Home Assistant or ioBroker you can build a lot of this yourself — if you know how, and keep maintaining the automations. Solhive ships its control strategies ready-made and tested, and still embraces your smart-home platform: as a device and data source, connected in a few clicks.

Lightweight Linux container on your Proxmox host — this is how our pilot systems run today. Lean, protected by snapshots and backups, cleanly separated from the rest of your infrastructure.
For NAS, mini PC or home server: Solhive as a container next to whatever you already run. Configuration and database live in volumes and survive every update.
Straight on Debian or Ubuntu as a systemd service — full control, minimal overhead. Ideal when there is already a machine working next to your PV system.

Using Home Assistant? Solhive deliberately runs as an independent service alongside it and connects your HA devices as a data source — but stays fully functional without HA. A HA add-on is not planned.
Very likely: 41 inverter profiles, 9 EV charger drivers and open standards from Modbus to OCPP. And whatever Solhive doesn't know natively joins via Home Assistant, ioBroker or MQTT.

Modbus profiles are plain YAML register maps — new models are often added without writing a single line of code.
The master key is OCPP: Solhive acts as a full OCPP 1.6 central system (CSMS) — so virtually any modern wallbox can be connected locally, regardless of brand. Multi-charger load balancing and automatic phase switching included.
Three routes, depending on the device:
SG-Ready covers roughly 80 % of the devices in the DACH region. On top: the “hot-water target” job type keeps your desired temperature within its time window — by deliberately forcing heat-pump operation when needed.

Cheap and expensive windows are available to every job (“charge the battery only below X ct”), and savings are calculated hour by hour against your actual tariff.
Check the generic routes first: SunSpec and Modbus TCP cover most inverters, OCPP nearly every modern wallbox, Home Assistant and MQTT almost everything else. Modbus profiles are YAML files — new devices are often added without any programming.
